The second, or Sacral Chakra, Svadhisthana, is located between the pubic bone and the navel, and encompasses the lower belly, inner pelvis, and a bundle of nerves near the bottom of the spinal cord called the "hypogastric plexus." The Sanskrit word, Svadhisthana, can be translated as "the dwelling place of the self," or "one's own abode," and represents our truest potential -- our identity as a human and what we do with it.
The sacral chakra greatly influences our relationships with others and with ourselves. It is influenced by how emotions were expressed or repressed in the family during childhood. It is connected to issues of reproduction and sexuality, financial well-being, and desires. It determines how we feel about intimacy, procreation, sensuality, self-confidence, and sociability. A balanced sacral chakra leads to feelings of abundance, pleasure, wellness, self-confidence and joy. We have a healthy sexuality, we are energetic, motivated, and confident, and have endless creative ideas and expressions. If it is closed or out of balance, we might feel guilt or shame around sexuality, experience emotional instability or sexual dysfunction, or even depression or addictions.
An over-active Svadhisthana can make us feel over-emotional, quick to attach to others, moody, attracted to drama, or lacking personal boundaries. An under-active Svadhisthana can make us unemotional, closed off, stiff, or lacking self-worth.
When our Svadhisthana is balanced, we have the creative energy to enjoy life and the fruits of our labors. If our Svadhisthana is out of balance, we can exhibit physical and/or emotional symptoms, such as:
Emotional Symptoms:
Depression Emotionally Explosive Co-Dependent Over- or Under-Sexualized Lacking Self-Esteem or Self-Worth Manipulative
Sacral Chakra associated body parts and endocrine glands:
